June 10-- Jun. 10--BAY CITY, Mich. -- The winners of the upcoming LPGA Tour event at the Midland Country Club will take home a special memento this year.
Bay City's Herman Hiss & Co. designed a custom pendant for the occasion inspired by the Midland Country Club logo and reminiscent of the city's iconic Tridge.
Nick Schwall, a fifth-generation co-owner of Herman Hiss, designed the sparkly 18k white gold and diamond necklace with custom pendant for the winning two-woman team. Each woman will receive her own. A smaller version, made of sterling silver and white sapphire, is to be awarded to one event volunteer chosen at random.
Utica-based HL Manufacturing made the jewelry.
"I wanted our winners to have something that was just memorable," Schwall said. "These two pieces are even more special because they were designed and made in Michigan."
The white gold and diamond necklaces with custom pendants are each valued at $6,000. The sterling silver and gemstone piece is valued at $2,000.
The inaugural Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational takes place Monday through Saturday, July 15-20, at Midland Country Club, 1120 W. St. Andrews Road. Throughout the week, 144 of the world's best female golfers will compete in a 72-hole team event.
Herman Hiss signed on as an event sponsor for the next five years and will provide the custom necklaces each year, Schwall said.
Herman Hiss, located at 905 Washington Ave. and founded in 1867, has more than 150 years of history in Bay City, making it one of the city's oldest and longest operating businesses. It is owned by Schwall, his wife, Christine Schwall, Thomas Hiss Tabor and Barbara Tabor Bosco.
Schwall said he hopes the necklace will remind the winners of their visit to the Great Lakes Bay Region.
"Wherever they come from, wherever they go, I hope they remember where it came from and tell people all about it," he said.
